Flavor of the week

This one's for all my Harry Potter fans.

I made a Butterbeer Pint last week and it had me feeling like I was in potions class.

And you don't need the Butterbeer extract.

It honestly doesn't add a ton of flavor and it costs $15 a bottle.

The real magic comes from mixing a protein shake and diet cream soda in the Creami base.

Just make sure you get all the carbonation out before it goes in the freezer.

Rapid Reviews

Recently I've been grinding through the protein ice cream brands you can find in stores.

I figured it was time to stack them up against each other and give you my ranking.

From worst to best, here's my current list:

  • 8. Yasso
  • 7. Halo Top
  • 6. Nick's
  • 5. Protein Pints
  • 4. Sweet Gains
  • 3. Frozen One
  • 2. Favorite Day
  • 1. Ninja Creami

Now I don't think anything will dethrone the Ninja Creami, but I'll update this list every now and then as new flavors and recipes come out.

What brands am I missing?

In the Lab

Ever since I tried that peanut butter chip ice cream last week I've been craving more peanut butter.

So I've been playing around with how to include it in my Creami pints.

Specifically, I've been testing Lakanto's peanut butter powder.

A few things stood out.

First, it's way lower in calories than regular peanut butter.

You get the same flavor, but a fraction of the fat and about half the calories.

Second, Lakanto adds their monk fruit sweetener.

So it adds some nice sweetness for 0 calories.

Experimenting with this in the pints surprised me…

The more powder you add, the closer to real ice cream texture you get.

One big thing you have to do though:

Use the immersion blender to mix it before you freeze it.

If you don't, all the powder sinks to the bottom and you'll never taste it until the last few bites.

Keep an eye out for the PB&J pint coming soon.
